How to Choose the Right Dumpster Size for Your Project
A Bin & Gone · September 11, 2026
Choosing the right dumpster size is the difference between a smooth project and paying for a second haul. Here is a simple way to match the container to the job.
Common roll-off sizes
Roll-off dumpsters are measured in cubic yards. The four sizes you will see most often are:
- 10-yard — small cleanouts, a single room, or a load of dirt and concrete.
- 20-yard — flooring or carpet removal, large garage cleanouts, and mid-size remodels.
- 30-yard — whole-home cleanouts, new construction, and major renovations.
- 40-yard — commercial jobs and large-volume, lightweight debris.
How to estimate what you need
When in doubt, size up one step. A container that is slightly too big costs less than renting a second one when the first fills early. For heavy materials like concrete, brick, or dirt, choose a smaller size — weight limits are reached long before the container looks full.
Keep the job moving
Pick a level spot with clear overhead access for drop-off and pickup, and keep debris below the fill line so the load can be hauled safely and legally.
